ocr: Scramble for Land. At high noonc on April 22,1889, ,the U.S.government opened the first American Indian lands to non-Indian settlement. Some 50,000 people rushedto claim the 160-acre tracts. Over the next17 years, nearly half of the Indian Territory was opened - to non-Indian setlers. In 1907the Indian Territory was dissolvedand the lands pecame part of Oklahoma--the 46th state to enter the Union.
